Some of the common questions we get about fence repair include:

How much does it cost to repair a fence UK?
The cost to repair a fence is estimated at between £100 and £200 in the UK, depending on the material to be replaced.

A quote for such a project should include all materials including posts/timber, nails or screws, brackets (if required) and any other items necessary to complete the job. Beware of companies who try to sneak in extra costs by not including important extras that are needed for your fence repairs. Choose from our timber suppliers who have guaranteed products that will keep you safe from termites for years to come!

Let us take the hassle out of finding a reputable company for your fence repair. We include all materials - because we know that it's not just the wood you're buying from our trusted timber suppliers!

Is it better to replace or repair a fence?
The cost of repair is usually cheaper than that of replacement. You should also consider factors such as security, privacy and property value before you make your decision.

As fence repair is cheaper than outright replacement, perhaps you should consider this first except the repair costs are almost equivalent to the value of a replacement. if repairing the fence is a temporary fix which means you will have to pay for further repairs then replacing the fence may be the best option.

What are the most common fence repair issues?
The most common fence repairs are repairs made to the stiles (vertical posts) and rails (horizontal planks).

If your timber is softwood, say cedar or pine you can use a softwood stain. These are available in colours including honey pine, dark mahogany and natural walnut. Softwood stains will typically pay for themselves within 12 months - one treatment per year should be more than enough to keep them looking good.

Pine is very unlikely to rot so there’s no need for painting as it offers protection against weather damage for up to five years. You can also treat with preservative which will prolong its life further but be careful how you apply this product as over-treatment could result in peeling. Over time, the exposed wood will begin to fade but the good news is that repainting won’t prove expensive as timber paint is pretty cheap.

If you apply a hardwood stain (light or dark) every two years, it could be even longer before you need to replace your fence panels. If you want to add a level of protection against fungal attack while retaining the natural colour of your timber fence panels, consider using an anti-fungal hardwood treatment.

At least once a year, we recommend you paint your fence as part of their maintenance routine which will further increase their life expectancy and performance over the long term. The best time to paint your fence is in the Spring.

What is the importance of maintaining your fence?
It is important to keep your fences well maintained, but with a little maintenance and care, they should last you for many years to come.

Upgrading or replacing your fence can change the appearance and value of your home – so if this kind of work isn't really your cup of tea, we can help take the stress out of it all by providing a bespoke Fencing Maintenance Service, designed to fit around your lifestyle as well as your budget. This way you get an annual service that takes care of everything for you - leaving plenty more time left over for fun stuff!

Can you repair a fence post?
We can repair or replace your fence posts, in most instances.

It's important to get all of the repairs planned before work begins as this is more cost-effective and reduces the time it takes to finish your project. We will try hard to have everything done within a day but there may be some circumstances that could lead to us needing to come back – such as if we've run out of materials or wrong materials were ordered – please bear with us in these circumstances, it wouldn't be fair for us not to tell you about any potential delays upfront!

How do I know when my fence needs repairing?
The best way to ensure nothing unexpected occurs is by regular inspections and maintenance; this will help you avoid costly damage from occurring in the first place. If you notice the following signs, this could be an indication that your fence requires mending:

Leaning posts – Our posts are driven into concrete or solid ground and if they become loose there will be excess movement causing the fence to lean in one direction. This usually happens near corners where pressure is put on the post/s from vehicles turning.

There is a gap between two panels which has increased over time – This can happen when the material expands and contracts with weather changes such as rain which results in gaps forming at joints; the good news is that flexing material helps absorb some of this expansion and movement. For bonded fences, it's also likely that wooden slats are affected by different levels of moisture due to rain and sun which can also create gaps.

The panels are bowed at the top and bottom – In some situations, you may see this as a result of a strong wind, but it could indicate that there is movement in the posts due to poor anchoring. If the ground beneath the fence post hasn't been dug out correctly or isn't completely solid, posts may sink slightly over time. This can cause bowing in panels at either side or top/bottom and excessive rainwater running down one side of a panel causing damage to the surface. The best way to correct this is to dig out under the sunken post until it's back into position (using an existing post hole if possible), add additional support to firm up the ground (or replace it with a new post), and ensure the panels are fitted properly. If you're using a metal fence, make sure it's fixed into an existing concrete base rather than only being held in place by the posts. Most fencing manufacturers provide specific details for this - check before you buy so that your panels will last longer and not sag over time.

If your fence has been blown over completely, find out why - In many cases, this can be due to loose stakes holding one or more panels down (and remember to replace these). Alternatively, there may have been damage underneath where the wind was able to push the posts or blow underneath one of your panels. Again, dig up under each panel until you've discovered the cause and rectified the problem – check with a qualified professional if you're not sure of the exact cause of the problem.

Fence repair posts - You may need to replace your fence posts if they were damaged in any way when the fence blew over – wind can quickly snap a wooden post, and once this happens it's only a matter of time before the rest of the fence will fall down as well. Wooden posts are best replaced with treated timber or steel posts - though for long-lasting results you should choose treated wood due to its resistance to rot. Other considerations include concrete, brick (if these match your other garden building) or even stone; finding one that fits well with your fencing is part of the artistry of installing a fence.

The type of materials you want for your posts will depend on where your garden is located and how it's used, amongst other things. For example, in areas with very high rainfall you'll need to choose wood or steel that has been treated against rot and stays straight once installed.

How long does it take to repair a standard fence?
This will depend on the extent of damage caused by exposure to elements over time. It's normally between two weeks and one month for most repairers in the UK. Some minor repairs can even be completed within seven working days. But remember: you will still need time to clean up after work has been done!

Just some of what we cover as part of fence repair include:
Repairing post holes (and damaged posts) - whatever caused them; beavers are the most common culprit!
Clearing out, inspecting and treating all posts to keep them in tip-top condition.
Weeding around the fence line – getting rid of any unwanted plants which could damage your fences over time.
Replacement fence panels when they become damaged or need replacing due to wear and tear (for full wooden fencing) - helping you save money on costly replacement costs!
Repairing top rails when needed - this can be preferable to most people rather than replacing the whole panel, depending on how far along it is or how much it would cost. Sometimes just one individual rail needs fixing, so why pay for a whole new panel? We'll happily repair small sections of the woodwork where needed too!

And that's just scratching the surface, you'll be surprised at just how much we offer in terms of fence repairs.

Considering everything that's included in our comprehensive fence repair service, this is one area where it really does make sense to use our services compared to doing the work yourself. Not only are you saving money by using our service but you're also freeing up your time so you can focus on other things.

We have been working with clients in Bracknell for many years and now operate across Sunningdale, Ascot, Wokingham, Windsor and surrounding areas in Berkshire.
